Fitch, Walter Hood (1817 - 1892) Born in Glasgow, Scotland, 28 February 1817, died at Kew, England, 14 January 1892. Walter Hood Fitch drew over 2700 plates for Curtis's Botanical Magazine from 1834-77, and nearly 500 plates for Hooker's Icones Plantarum 1836-76. Altogether he produced over 10,000 published drawings.

Perhaps the best known of the artists of Curtis's Botanical Magazine was Walter Hood Fitch, a remarkably productive illustrator with more than 12,000 botanical drawings published during his career. He had a distinctively bold compositional style and a unique talent for the dramatic placement of a plant within the confines of the page.

Walter Hood Fitch was born in Glasgow in 1817. By the age of 13 he was employed as an apprentice pattern drawer at a mill. He took to botanical illustration following a meeting with William Jackson Hooker, who was so impressed by young Fitch's artistic talents that he bought him out of his apprenticeship.
